Kia ora, I am Dave Head a new non-sailing member [I sold my 'little boat' to pay for a trip to Tonga last year.] I am an open water diver, but have mainly been a snorkeller. I make reefball artificial reef modules [see www.reefball.org and linked associated sites.] Currently I am helping the students of the Mahia Marine Science School 'Te Au o Hikiaro' in making a reef so them to study colonisation etc. These are college students from mainly Maori boarding schools who give up 10 days each term to study Tangaroa- Kaitiakitanga etc.
These RB units have been used in coral reef areas to make snorkelling trails for clumsy tourists to get them from damaging coral reefs. About 6 or 7 hundred thousand RB's in 55 countires have been depolyed for a variety of reasons. i.e rebuilding reefs off Phuket after the tsumani, erosion control and mostly just to increase habitat. Some projects for poor fishermen who have destroyed their reefs have been done in Indonesia.
