The Boat
OceansWatch have chosen a Wharram
Islander 65 as the perfect base for it's humanitarian and marine
conservation projects. The first of these catamarans will operate
in the SW Pacific with 5 others following as funds allow to cover
the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans and the Mediterranean.
The Wharram was chosen because:
 |
It represents very good value for our
investors |
 |
It has a shallow draft so can go to more places than a keelboat |
 |
It's a work boat, not a fancy yacht, so it will be cheaper to maintain |
 |
It has a huge deck space, so can carry many people in an emergency |
 |
It can carry a team of 8 and 2-3 crew comfortably and many tons of cargo |
 |
It has a very "ethnic" look that will appeal to the people we hope it will benefit |
 |
It's a relatively light and easily driven boat so it can sail a lot and will not be too costly to run under power |
We have visited the builders
in the Philippines. They are a very ethical company who look after
the workforce very well indeed.
